Fintan Walsh, County PRO, weekly update

Three Medals won in England

 Four Ferrybank AC athletes competed at the British u 20 and u 23
Championships in Bedford last week end and they did very well coming
home with two silver and one bronze medal. Ben Kiely having won his
heat in the 400 metres Hurdles on Saturday was second in the final on
Sunday in a fine time of 53.31 seconds and this should secure him a
place on the Irish team for the World Junior Championships in
Barcelona next month. Niamh Whelan had her best performances this
season over the two days. On Sunday she finished second in the 200
metres final u 23 in 24.11 seconds and on Saturday she was sixth in
the 100 metres final in 11.96 against a strong wind, Cara Kennedy was
third in the u 23 hammer with a throw of 54.78. metres and Sorcha
Murphy was 5th in the High Jump u 20 with 1.67 Metres a season's best

Munster titles won

In Templemore on Sunday last athletes from Waterford were in top form
at the Munster Senior and Masters Championships. At senior level
Ferrybank AC had wins with Kelly Proper in the Long Jump, Keith Smith
Javelin and Sean Archer Triple Jump, Smith was also second in the Long
Jump, Kate Hickey won the Discus, Clare Collins was second in the High
Jump and Lisa Houlihan third in the Hurdles for West Waterford and
Siobhan Heylin Waterford Ac was second in the 1500 metres.In the
Masters Waterford Athletic Club and West Waterford both had brilliant
days with several wins.The Waterford AC winners  were ; Women o 35
Jacinta Power Discus, Suzanne Dullaghan 100 and 200 metres, o 40
Deirdre Chapman Javelin,o 45 Elaine Barry 200 and 400 Metres,  o 45
Gabriel Blair 800 metres, o50 Paula Kavanagh 100 Metres and 200
metres. The women's team won the 4x 100 m Relay with Jacinta Power
Elaine Barry, Gabriel Blair and  Suzanne Dullaghan The men's winners
were o 35  Brendan Leahy 100 and 200 Metres, o 40 Kieran Leahy 100 and
200 Metres, o45 Tom O.Brien 400 Metres, High Jump and Long Jump,
Malachy Mc Glynn 1500 Metres, the men also won the 4 x 100 Metres
Relay with Brendan and Kieran Leahy Paschal Halley and Michael Coleman
For West Waterford the winners were; 0 35 Des Feeney 800 Metres, o 45
800 M Harry O'Brien, o 50 Javelin Ml Tutty Javelin Jacinta Sheill
Javelin, o 55 800 Metres Joe Gough, o 60 3000 Metres John Foley,o 60
100 M, 200 M, Javelin and Hammer Terri Gough

Harty wins in Ring

Eighty competed in the Annual Mooney's Bar 6 Miles Ras Na Rinne in
Ring on Friday last and Philip Harty from Ballinamult who runs with
Donore Harriers and presently in fine form won in a time of 31 minutes
28 seconds, Ravis Zakis, West Waterford AC was second in 32.13 and
Shane Mullaney, Thurles Crokes third in 32.23 Angela McCann, Clonmel
won the ladies section in 37.33, Racquel Valadez, Pikes Peak Road
Runners, Colorado was second in 41.09 and Theresa Cunningham Carrick
on Suir was third in 41.11. The different age group winners were as
follows. Men : over 40 Peter Duggan, St Joseph's, o45 Dan Kelleher,
Midleton,o50 Gerry Cantwell, West Waterford, o 55 Colin Lyons, do,
Junior Damien Murphy, do. Ladies o 35 Karen Ryan, West Waterford, o 40
Brigid Coffey, do o45 Ann Dunford, do and o 50 Josie Ui Chuirrin, do.
It was another race in the Ger Wyley Sports Summer Series

Barr's selected

Thomas and Jessie Barr have both been selected on the Irish Team for
the European Championship in Helsinki later this month both in 400
Metres Hurdles races, this will be the biggest stage yet for both who
are still seeking ( A )Standard's for the Olympics.

All Ireland Junior and u 23 Championships

The first big National fixture of the season is in Tullamore on Sunday
next June 24 th. Its the all Ireland Junior and u 23 Championships and
many athletes from Waterford will be in action.Time is now running out
for athletes chasing qualifying times for the World junior
Championships and many will be hoping they can get the standard on
Sunday. The programme begins at 10.30 am with the men's Hammer and
first race on the track is at 11. 45 pm the women's 400 Metres
hurdles.

Tailteann Schools Inter provincial

Santry is the venue on Saturday next for the Tailteann Schools Inter
provincial and several athletes from Waterford Schools are on the
Munster selection.

Waterford Community Games Finals on Sunday

On Sunday next the Annual Waterford Community Games Athletic Finals
are at the RSC at 11 am. Several Communities from all over the County
will compete and the parade will begin at 11 am sharp and all  those
participating are asked to be at the venue in good time

All Ireland Juvenile Championships

On Saturday next the All Ireland Lower Age Team Championships under
9,10 and 11 are at Cork IT Track and there will be competitors from
Waterford clubs

5 Miles Fun Run/ Walk on Sunday

Above will take place next Sunday June 24 th at 12 noon from "The Park
Inn Pub", Paddy Browne's Road, Waterford in aid of Crumlin's Children
's Hospital and Naomh Pol GAA Club. Entries from 10.45 am at the venue

Waterford Viking Marathon

Entries closed on Friday last for the WLR/FM Viking Marathon in the
City and surrounding areas including Tramore on Saturday June 30 th
