Fine performances at first County Cross Country event

On Sunday last the County Cross Country Championship season got under
way in Abbeyside and it was held in wet and windy conditions and most
of the clubs in the county picked up medals. Entries were on the small
side but their were a number of good individual performances
nevertheless and in particular by Aoife Hamilton from West Waterford
in the under 16 race. Herself and Aisling Quinn Ferrybank AC fought
out a thrilling duel but in the final 200 metres or so Aoife sprinted
clear for an eye catching performance. Others to impress at juvenile
level were Eoin Browne Ferrybank AC with a clear cut win in the under
16 grade and Lynsey McGuire Waterford AC was a most impressive winner
of the under 12 event as was Cian O'Riordan West Waterford under 12.
In the juvenile team competitions West Waterford were tops with six
wins, Waterford AC had one as had An Ghaeltacht. Des Feeney West
Waterford easily won the Novice title and Harry O'Brien do won the
Masters again comfortably.

Death

The death took place last week end after a long illness of Br J C
Joyce a pioneer and hugely influential figure in the development of
juvenile athletics in Ireland in the 1960’s. Many in the athletic
scene in Waterford County from that era will remember him and while he
at times could be controversial he had a great appetite for work and
made a major impact in the sport.  In 1967 shortly after the formation
of BLE a juvenile subsidiary body BLOE was formed and Br Joyce became
the inaugural chairman. His funeral took place on Monday last to North
Abbey Cemetery,Youghal. Sympathy is extended to all his relatives from
all in Waterford athletics.
