All Ireland University Championships in Carriganore.

Waterford IT is proud to host a very prestigious event this week end.
Its the All Ireland Inter Varsity Cross Country Championships at WIT
Carriganore Campus on the outskirts of the city on Saturday next March
10 th and a huge entry in both the men's and women's races are
expected with lots of Ireland's top athletes competing from all the
Universities and Higher Education Colleges in the 32 counties. WIT
will have many athletes competing and their men's team in particular
are expected to make a bold bid for team honours. The women's
championship is scheduled for 2.50 pm and the men's at 3.15 pm.and its
a fixture that should be well worth a visit and plenty of support for
the WIT teams would be appreciated.

All Ireland Schools in Galway.

Saturday is also the day for the AVIVA All Ireland Secondary Schools
Cross Country Championships in St Mary's in Galway. Many athletes from
Waterford schools will be participating both in the individual and
team sections in Junior, Intermediate and Senior Grades, boys and
girls. Athletes expected to figure prominently individually are
Aisling Quinn, Ursuline, Niamh Casey, Mercy and Bronagh Kearns Abbey
CC while in the team section a few can make their presence felt. The
first event is at 12 noon the junior girls.

Small Irish team at Worlds.

Athletics Ireland announced Derval O’Rourke (Leevale) as part of a
small but quality team for the World Track and Field Championships
which take places in Istanbul this week end from  the 9th to the 11th
of March. Club-mate Ciaran O’ Lionaird who placed 10th at World
Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Daegu last August will line
up in the Men’s 1500m. Ben Reynolds (North Down AC) will receive his
first Irish Cap after hitting the  standard of 7.74 to break his U23
Irish Indoor 60m Hurdles Record at the International Flanders
Athletics Meeting in Belgium earlier in the month. David McCarthy
(West Waterford AC)  has also achieved the standard in the 1500m but
will not be travelling as he will be competing for  Providence College
at the NCAA Indoor Championships which are on this week end also. Its
a pity that David is not in Istanbul as this would be yet another big
step up in class for him and much more prestigious than the Collegiate
Championships in the USA. which he is probably tied in to competing
in..

events and Walks which are very technical events its essential that
athletes are trained for them and not be produced on the day against
athletes well trained in these disciplines.
