Butlerstown 10 KM Road Race on Friday


The Annual Butlerstown 10 KM Road Race will be staged on this Friday
April 19 th with a 7 pm start near the Holy Cross Lounge a few miles
outside Waterford City on the old Waterford to Cork Road. Entries will
be taken at the Butlerstown GAA Centre nearby from 5.45 pm and it is
race 2 of the Ger Wyley/ Nike Sports Summer Series.

Road Races

 Races listed for this Sunday next April 21 st  are Wexford Half
Marathon and 10 KM at 10.30 am, contact 086 3060890  and 10 miles in
Cobh again  at 10.30 am, contact 087 9863805 The London Marathon is
also on Sunday morning.

Leevale Sports

Lots of athletes from clubs in Waterford are expected to compete in
the Leevale Open Sports in Cork this week end,. On Saturday its the
junior and senior sports and on Sunday its the turn of the juveniles
and both fixture start at 11 am at the Cork IT Track ,full programme
for both days on Leevale Website.

Irish University Championships.

At Cork IT Track on Friday and Saturday last the Irish University
Track and Field Championships were staged and Waterford athletes to
win medals were as follows; Women's high jump 1 st Sorcha Murphy with
U.L.,second placings went to Sean Archer WIT in triple jump, Lisa
Houlihan NUIM, pole vault, Thomas Houlihan CIT pole vault, Laura Behan
DCU 1500 metres, Thomas Boucher UCD weight and Lauraa Behan was third
in the walk  For WIT the following from the College collected medals:
Denis Hynes 1 st 100 metres, 2 nd 200 metres, Aoife Bartley 2nd long
jump, 3rd in high jump and Shane O'Dwyer 2 nd in high jump. Emmet
Jennings DCU son of Mary Ryan Jennings won the 3000 metres.

Spar Great Ireland run.

In Dublin on Sunday a top class International field of athletes
competed at the Great Ireland 10 km run which incorporated the Irish
Championship and Andrew Connick Ferrybank AC was 6 th Irish athlete to
finish, in the over 60 section of the Championship Joe Gough West
Waterford AC was second.

Bralitis wins Marinse Climb

170 competed in the first race in this year's Ger Wyley/Nike sports
Summer Road Series on Friday last from Dungarvan to the Marine Bar.
The 21 st Annual Marine Climb over 6 miles was won by Sandis Bralitis
West Waterford  in 32 minutes 48 seconds, Ravis Zakis  was second in
33.45 and Niall Sheil St Killian's Wexford was third in 33.51. Angela
McCann  Clonmel won the ladies section in 38.32, Corina Walsh West
Waterford was second in 41.52 and Phylss Flynn Stragglers was third in
42. 59. The category winners were as follows; Men  o/40  Peter Duggan
St Joseph's, o 45 Michael Dunford West Waterford, o 50 Walter Keane
Waterford, Junior Aaron Crotty ( ind ). Women  1  Angela McCann
Clonmel 38.32,  2  Corina Walsh West Waterford 41.52 , 3 Phylss Flynn
Stragglers 42.59, o 35 Ann Marie  Hayes St Catherine's, o 40 Audrey
Gaffney West Waterford, o 45 Ann Dunford do, o 50 Ger Houlihan Carrick
on Suir, Junior Hannah. Mai. Flynn Sth London Hrs. 170 com


Waterford Viking Marathon.

The course is now set for this years Waterford Viking Marathon and
Half Marathon. Both events will start at the same time at the same
place on The Mall at 9 am on Saturday June 29 th and both will finish
at the RSC. See Race Website for full information. Entries are coming
in fast and furious.

Track and Field

 Saturday and Sunday next April 20 th and 21 st Leevale Open Sports
Senior on 20 th and Juvenile 21 st.  Sunday Apil 28 th  .Munster
Junior & U/23 Track & Field & Juvenile Combined Events Championships,
Cork I.T.

Plaque Unveiled

On Friday evening last in Tournafulla Co Limerick a plaque was
unveiled by Ronnie Long from Limerick a life long member of Athletics
Ireland commemorating the feats of the legendary Sean O'Sullivan 34
times All Ireland Champion over distances from 2 miles to 15 miles
aswell as 6 times Cross Country Champion and his late brother Michael
achampion also. A huge crowd from their own location were present as
well as many athletes of Sean's era from many parts of Ireland
including yours truly. Sean now 78 looked as fit as ever and is a
compulsive golf player nowadays and a very good one at that. Of a very
shy personality and a most humble person there were many tributes paid
to Sean and his brother by those from their local community as well as
Athletic , GAA and Golf representatives,the O'Sullivan's competed on
many occasions in Waterford.
